"Cloak and dagger" was a fighting style common in the Renaissance involving a knife hidden beneath a cloak. The term later came into use as a metaphor, referring to situations involving intrigue, secrecy, espionage, or mystery. 

Geoffrey Chaucer, the famed English poet, alluded to "The smiler with the knife under the cloak" in "The Knight's Tale", penned around the year 1400. If we interpret this phrase literally, it could pertain to the historical use of the cloak and dagger in European martial arts. The cloak served to hide the dagger, offer some protection against attacks, limit the opponent's weapon mobility, and serve as a distraction. This combat method was taught and documented by fencing master Achille Marozzo in his book, Opera Nova. Although not the first choice of weaponry, it might have been used for self-defense in situations where one did not have a sword. Given that the cloak was a commonly worn garment during that era, it could be utilized as a defense tool. Other masters like Di Grassi and Marozzo also highlighted the use of the cloak with the rapier.

The phrase took on a metaphorical meaning in the early 19th century, translated from the French term de cape et d'épée and the Spanish phrase de capa y espada, both meaning "of cloak and sword". These terms were used to describe a style of drama characterized by swashbuckling heroes who wore these items. In 1840, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow referred to a comedy of 'cloak and sword' when he wrote, "In the afternoon read La Dama Duende of Calderón – a very good comedy of 'cloak and sword'." The phrase "cloak and dagger" was later used by Charles Dickens in a sarcastic manner in his work Barnaby Rudge in 1841, as a reference to this type of drama.
